Frequently Asked Questions
- What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of almost hair-thin, sterile needles into the body. Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are solid. The needles are inserted into acupuncture points that are found along energetic channels that traverse the body. Inserting needles into these points, can enhance the flow of qi or energy within the channels, help clear blockages, relieve pain and improve the overall health of the person being treated.
- What is qi?
Qi can roughly be translated as the universal life energy that is within, around and the matrix of everything. Qi serves many functions in the human body. It protects from illness, provides warmth, is the source of all movement, it provides nourishment through the food we eat and the air we breathe, and it is the energy that regulates our organs and other bodily systems among other things. When qi is abundant and flowing smoothly, a person enjoys robust health. However, qi can become deficient or stagnant, which leads to health problems such as pain, fatigue, illness, mental/emotional issues, etc. Acupuncture, herbal medicine and other healing practices from Chinese Medicine can help to reestablish a balanced flow of qi in the body, facilitating health and vitality of body mind and spirit.
- Does acupuncture hurt?
Unlike the hollow hypodermic needles that are used for drawing blood and administering shots, acupuncture needles are almost hair-thin and solid, making them essentially pain free. There are a variety of sensations you may experience with needle insertion. These sensations can include tingling, warmth, a mild pressure, or a rippling or flow of energy. These sensations are due to the needle’s contacting the qi. Other times you may feel nothing. Most people report that acupuncture makes them feel very relaxed.
- What do acupuncture needles do?
The qi in our body flows through 12 primary channels that are linked to different organ systems that are responsible for different bodily and mental functions. Along each channel are points where the energy tends to gather. When an acupuncture needle is inserted into one of these points, the point’s energy and action is stimulated, helping to clear blockages and/or bring strength to the area or system involved.
- What does an acupuncture treatment look like?
The duration of a session varies with the treatment and the patient’s response; it typically lasts about an hour. The first session tends to be longer. We’ll spend extra time talking about your health concerns and history and developing a treatment plan. After our discussion, I will ask to take your pulse and look at your tongue, which are specific Chinese diagnostic aids that will give us further information about your health. Then your acupuncture treatment will commence and you can relax.
- Will I have to take Chinese herbs?
Chinese herbs are a great compliment to acupuncture and can speed up your healing process. Unlike drugs, they address the root of your health problem as well as its symptoms. I may prescribe a Chinese herbal formula for you, depending upon your health condition.
