Suggested Readings

If you are interested in learning more about Chinese or Oriental medicine, I highly recommend the following books:

The Web That Has No Weaver : Understanding Chinese Medicine by Ted J. Kaptchuk

This is an excellent comprehensive introduction to Chinese Medicine for the lay person.

Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine by Harriet Beinfield and Efrem Korngold

This book is a great introduction to the philosophy of Chinese Medicine.

Qi Gong

The Ling Gui School of Qi Gong, in Seattle, WA, trains both lay practitioners as well as Qi Gong instructors.  You can also find a wealth of information about Qi Gong on their websiteTo find a Qi Gong instructor in the Portland area or elsewhere, here is a list of teachers.

Psychotherapists

Douglas Johns, MSW, LCSW is a psychotherapist who specializes in Existential Psychotherapy and Stress Reduction Meditation.  You can view his website at: http://www.compassionateway.com

Carol Spears, MSW, LCSW’s counseling practice specializes in grief, anxiety, depression and trauma work with clients.  She also brings 15 years of meditation and mindfulness practices, and a kind, insightful presence to her work.  You can view her  website at www.mindinbalance.com.

Focusing

With some clients I do mindfulness exercises based on Inner-Relationship (IR) Focusing.  Focusing is a tool for understanding feelings, behaviors, and physical sensations - chronic pain for example - more thoroughly and for getting “unstuck” in your life.  For more information on Focusing, click here.
